What is Obesity and What Causes the Disease?

When you become a member of our weight loss clinic in Roswell, GA, you'll learn quickly that obesity is a multifaceted disease. It's most often characterized by the accumulation of excessive body fat. Though it's typically characterized as a cosmetic concern, it's actually a serious medical problem that increases your risk of severe health complications. Often, obese individuals find it challenging to shed weight due to environmental, genetic, and physiological factors.

Our FDA-approved program includes:

Sleep

Not Enough Sleep

Lack of sleep can have negative impacts on your body as it can lead to increased appetite and hormonal changes, ultimately causing obesity. It's very important that you get enough sleep to maintain your well-being, and by proxy, your weight.

Medications

Medications and Health Conditions

Some hormone problems, as well as certain medications, can lead to weight gain. This includes conditions like an underactive thyroid, Cushing syndrome, and polycystic ovary syndrome, as well as medications like antidepressants, corticosteroids, and seizure medications.

Empty Calories

Empty Calories

Popular beverages like beers and sodas are chock-full of liquid calories that never fill you up. Mix in dehydration from lack of water and a poor diet, and you've got an equation that almost always equals obesity.

Constant Stress

Constant Stress

We live in a day and time where stress from work and from life is a prevalent as obesity. When you're stressed, it's easy to give in and consume unhealthy foods like candies and burritos. While doing so can give you a short spike of dopamine, it won't last. Eating sweets and fast foods is one of the worst ways to deal with stress.

Genetics

Genetics

Studies indicate that genetics can influence the development of obesity. In fact, certain genetic disorders, such as Prader-Willi syndrome, can lead directly to obesity. Genes may also make some individuals more susceptible to weight gain. However, researchers believe that other factors, such as a sedentary lifestyle or a diet rich in calorie-dense foods, are also necessary for a person to become overweight.

Sedentary

Sedentary Lifestyle

If you aren't very active on a daily basis, chances are you're eating more calories than your body is able to burn off. With the advent of smart devices and other popular entertainment options, living a sedentary life is more common than ever.

Poor Diet

Poor Diet

This one is a no-brainer. If you only eat greasy burgers and carb-packed foods, you'll continue to gain weight.

Smoking Cessation

Smoking Cessation

When you quit smoking, your body can literally breathe a breath of fresh air. However, quitting cigarettes and nicotine can also cause weight fluctuations. When left to spiral out of control, it can lead to obesity.

What are the Consequences of Living with Obesity?

Many obese Americans are shamed daily for how they look. It never feels good to be made fun of or stared at, but obese people have more to worry about than what others think. They are at risk for several fatal or long-term health issues. Many of those issues are among the leading causes of death in the U.S. Generally, the more you weigh, the greater chance you have of developing bad and even fatal complications such as:

Understanding the Dangers of Fad and Yo-Yo Diets

When you're obese and learn that you're at risk for major health events like heart attacks and strokes, it can make you anxious and want to lose weight ASAP. Unfortunately, many overweight people turn to fad diets and "lose weight quick" programs.

If you were to ask a random person on the street to name a trendy diet, they could probably name one, past or present. Diets like Paleo, South Beach Atkins, and Keto are well-known to most people. However, the issue with these diets is that they may not work for everyone, and even when they do, the outcomes are not always long-lasting.

Some common characteristics of unhealthy fad diets include:

  • Unrealistic and unhealthy weight loss practices
  • "Special" food sources that help weight "melt away"
  • Quick weight loss without needing to exercise or stick to a healthy diet
  • Fad diets are usually bad about prioritizing good nutrition. Instead, they tout extreme life choices or sketchy pills. While FDA-approved medicines such as Semaglutide injections have been shown to be effective when prescribed by a doctor, using a fad diet is counterproductive to healthy living.
  • If you're struggling with your weight, it is likely that you are feeling stressed and trying to find an effective solution. You may have already tried multiple fad diets, unsafe diet pills, or even invested in workout equipment that you never use. Yet, despite your best efforts, you're still struggling. If this sounds familiar, it could be because you never received clinical guidance at a weight loss clinic in Roswell, GA.
  • The most effective solution to your weight problem begins with a medical weight loss plan from Innovative Health and Wellness. Instead of following a fad diet, we encourage you to speak to one of our weight loss clinicians who can help you lose those unwanted pounds in an enjoyable, efficient manner that is tailored to your body, not someone else's.

Area prices up 3.1 percent over the past 12 months

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell rose 0.3 percent from February to April, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. (See table A.) Regional Commissioner Victoria G. Lee noted that the bi-monthly all items increase was largely attributed to increases in the gasoline and shelter indexes. (Data in this report are not seasonally adjusted. Accordingly, bi-monthly changes may reflect the impact of seasonal influences.)

The all items CPI-U advanced 3.1 percent for the 12 months ending in April. (See chart 1 and table A.) The index for all items less food and energy rose 2.8 percent over the past year. The energy index and the food index also increased over the last 12 months, up 6.9 percent and 2.6 percent, respectively. (See table 1.)

Food

The food index rose 0.3 percent from February to April, reflecting increases in the food at home (+0.3 percent) and the food away from home (+0.2 percent) indexes. Four of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased over the two-month period, including nonalcoholic beverages and beverage materials (+3.6 percent) and cereals and bakery products (+2.5 percent). In comparison, the indexes for fruits and vegetables (-2.2 percent) and other food at home (-0.8 percent) declined from February to April.

The food index advanced 2.6 percent for the 12 months ending in April, led by a 4.0-percent increase in the food away from home index. The food at home index also increased over the past year, up 1.7 percent. Four of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased over the last 12 months, including the indexes for fruits and vegetables (+4.4 percent) and cereals and bakery products (+5.1 percent).

Energy

The energy index rose 2.4 percent from February to April, reflecting a 9.3-percent jump in the gasoline index. The index for electricity changed little over the bi-monthly period, up 0.1 percent. In comparison, the index for natural gas declined 13.2 percent from February to April.

The energy index advanced 6.9 percent for the 12 months ending in April, primarily due to a 15.0-percent increase in the electricity index. The gasoline (+2.6 percent) and natural gas (+4.0 percent) indexes also increased over the 12-month span.

All items less food and energy

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.1 percent from February to April. The shelter index contributed to the increase, up 0.3 percent over the two-month period. The index for owners’ equivalent rent rose 0.7 percent, while the index for rent of primary residence declined 0.2 percent over the bi-monthly period. Among the other indexes to decline from February to April include household furnishings and operations (-4.2 percent), new and used motor vehicles (-1.0 percent), and apparel (-1.5 percent).

The index for all items less food and energy advanced 2.8 percent for the 12 months ending in April. Shelter (+4.9 percent) was the largest contributor as owners’ equivalent (+5.9 percent) and rent of primary residence (+3.9 percent) also increased over the past year.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell Consumer Price Index for June 2024 is scheduled to be released on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at 8:30 a.m. (ET).

Technical Note

The Consumer Price Index for Atlanta is published bi-monthly. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes CPIs for two population groups: (1) a CPI for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) which covers approximately 93 percent of the total U.S. population and (2) a CPI for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) which covers approximately 29 percent of the total U.S. population. The CPI-U includes, in addition to wage earners and clerical workers, groups such as professional, managerial, and technical workers, the self-employed, short-term workers, the unemployed, and retirees and others not in the labor force.

The CPI is based on prices of food, clothing, shelter, fuels, transportation fares, charges for doctors' and dentists' services, drugs, and the other goods and services that people buy for day-to-day living. Each month, prices are collected in 75 urban areas across the country from about 6,000 housing units and approximately 22,000 retail establishments—department stores, supermarkets, hospitals, filling stations, and other types of stores and service establishments. All taxes directly associated with the purchase and use of items are included in the index.

The index measures price changes from a designated reference date; for most of the CPI-U the reference base is 1982-84 equals 100. An increase of 7 percent from the reference base, for example, is shown as 107.000. Alternatively, that relationship can also be expressed as the price of a base period market basket of goods and services rising from $100 to $107. For further details see the CPI home page on the internet at www.bls.gov/cpi and the CPI section of the BLS Handbook of Methods available on the internet at www.bls.gov/opub/hom/cpi/.

In calculating the index, price changes for the various items in each location are averaged together with weights that represent their importance in the spending of the appropriate population group. Local data are then combined to obtain a U.S. city average. Because the sample size of a local area is smaller, the local area index is subject to substantially more sampling and other measurement error than the national index. In addition, local indexes are not adjusted for seasonal influences. As a result, local area indexes show greater volatility than the national index, although their long-term trends are quite similar. NOTE: Area indexes do not measure differences in the level of prices between cities; they only measure the average change in prices for each area since the base period.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Core Based Statistical Area is comprised of Barrow, Bartow, Butts, Carroll, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Haralson, Heard, Henry, Jasper, Lamar, Meriwether, Morgan, Newton, Paulding, Pickens, Pike, Rockdale, Spalding, and Walton Counties in Georgia.

ROSWELL, Ga. - One Georgia city has been named among the best places to live in the United States in a new ranking.

The website Livability recently released its list of the Top 100 Best Places to Live in the U.S. in 2024, and one Georgia city is close to topping its list for the Southeast.

The website has been compiling the list for more than a decade to help people discover the "most livable cities" in the country based on "nearly 100 data points and an algorithm that takes into account measures of a city's economy, housing and cost of living, amenities, transportation, environment, safety, education and health." Each city is given a LivScore, which is essentially a grade for the city based on the data points.

Livability gave Roswell a score of 837, which trailed only Cary, North Carolina, in the South.

USL soccer coming to Roswell

Two years before Atlanta hosts World Cup matches, there is another major development regarding soccer. Roswell has entered an agreement with the United Soccer League to develop a multi-use soccer stadium. It would be home to both a professional men's and women's soccer team.

The city of Roswell is another step closer to becoming the home to a women’s soccer stadium alongside an anchored entertainment district.

The United Soccer League and the city of Roswell agreed to explore the city’s potential to be the future home for a USL Super League professional women’s team and a USL Championship professional men’s team.

During a meeting on Monday, the Roswell City Council unanimously endorsed a letter of intent with the USL, kicking off a nine-month exclusive negotiation window extending through the end of the year. This period may be extended if necessary to finalize plans for what could become an iconic sports and entertainment venue.

Roswell exploring possible soccer stadium

Roswell has come into an agreement to explore bringing two professional soccer teams to the city.

The proposed stadium, pending agreement, would host a professional women’s soccer team in the Division One-sanctioned USL Super League and a men’s team in the USL Championship, aiming to ignite the local community and soccer enthusiasts across the region.

Mayor Kurt Wilson expressed his enthusiasm for the negotiations, viewing it as an "unprecedented opportunity" for Roswell.

"This is the beginning of what we hope will be a fruitful collaboration, filled with exciting possibilities for our city. The economic and cultural benefits of hosting such a district and teams would be immense," stated Mayor Wilson.

Wilson also described the possible agreement as a "transformational project and economic driver" for the city.

The decision to explore possibilities in Roswell was influenced by USL’s ambitious vision, the area’s rich soccer tradition, and the metro Atlanta area's profound love for the sport. Justin Papadakis, USL Deputy CEO and Chief Real Estate Officer, and a Roswell native, highlighted the city’s unique potential.

"Roswell has all the necessary components to host the premier USL Club, alongside a state-of-the-art stadium and entertainment district, spearheaded by a world-class professional women’s soccer team," Papadakis remarked.

While the letter of intent marks the beginning of exclusive negotiations, the exact location for the stadium and entertainment district is yet to be determined. The site selection and costs will be a critical part of the ongoing discussions, officials said.

"The fact is we're at the very beginning stages of negotiations," Wilson said.

The envisioned stadium would accommodate at least 10,000 spectators, with the USL positioned as the primary tenant and potential stadium operator or manager.

ROSWELL, Ga. — The City of Roswell is looking into the possibility of developing what they are calling a historic women's soccer stadium and anchored entertainment district.

The city council unanimously approved a letter of intent between the city and the United Soccer League (USL) on Monday. The agreement stipulates an exclusive nine-month negotiating period through the end of the year. There is also an option to extend negotiations - if needed - past the Dec. 31, 2024 agreement.

Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson said at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon that the city is currently in the first round of negotiations. He believes that the latest potential development could help the state of Georgia and the surrounding sister cities.

"This is not just about Roswell," said Mayor Wilson. "This is going to be a true multipurpose venue, and I think the envisioning of this is going to be so widespread and incredible. There are going to be so many people coming to enjoy this."

Mayor Wilson said that plans for the idea of a stadium in Roswell began in July 2021 when leaders believed that the city had to potential to have its own stadium, but the specific project had been in the talks for over a year.

USL Deputy CEO Justin Papadakis outlined why Roswell was chosen as the city for the potential stadium instead of Atlanta at Tuesday's news conference.

"When we were looking at Atlanta, a couple of factors came to mind. Atlanta United really showed the potential for soccer in the city. Then I think a lot of the credit has to go to the Braves for really showing the potential for a stadium-anchored development, he said. "The city partner is so critical because it's so multidimensional and we had such a large vision."

Roswell is Papadakis's hometown. He feels the decision is monumental for women's soccer.

"It's so important that the tens of thousands of little girls that play, they can go and say, 'if I work hard and put in the work, I can play on ESPN just like the boys,'" said Papadakis. "There has been so much investment in men's sports across the country and definitely in Georgia and Atlanta, and to have a stadium that provides an equal platform for the women to showcase and have a first-class fan experience is critical."

If a deal is reached, the stadium will be home to a professional women’s soccer team competing in the Division One-sanctioned USL Super League and a USL Championship professional men’s team.

“The City of Roswell is excited to enter into exclusive negotiations with the USL to potentially bring women’s and men’s professional soccer to Roswell,” Mayor Kurt Wilson said in a news release.

The location for the potential entertainment district and multi-use stadium has not been selected yet. Mayor Wilson said the city and USL have some sites in mind and are in the early stages of making sure transportation will be feasible.

Mayor Wilson added that as the city and USL narrow in on a site, they plan to be transparent with the community about how the development could affect them.

“This is an unprecedented opportunity for our City. Although we are just at the beginning of the process and many details will have to be worked through, we are looking forward to exploring possibilities with the USL," Wilson added. "Being home to a new entertainment district, a multi-purpose stadium, and two professional soccer teams would be a huge economic driver and point of pride for the City of Roswell.”

The stadium would seat at least 10,000, and the USL would serve as both the “anchor tenant” of the stadium and would have the right of first refusal to serve as the stadium operator/manager, the news release said.

Mayor Wilson said that although the negotiations are in the early stages, they plan to introduce a town hall that will include the public later.
