What is Obesity and What Causes the Disease?

When you become a member of our weight loss clinic in Shiloh West, GA, you'll learn quickly that obesity is a multifaceted disease. It's most often characterized by the accumulation of excessive body fat. Though it's typically characterized as a cosmetic concern, it's actually a serious medical problem that increases your risk of severe health complications. Often, obese individuals find it challenging to shed weight due to environmental, genetic, and physiological factors.

Our FDA-approved program includes:

Sleep

Not Enough Sleep

Lack of sleep can have negative impacts on your body as it can lead to increased appetite and hormonal changes, ultimately causing obesity. It's very important that you get enough sleep to maintain your well-being, and by proxy, your weight.

Medications

Medications and Health Conditions

Some hormone problems, as well as certain medications, can lead to weight gain. This includes conditions like an underactive thyroid, Cushing syndrome, and polycystic ovary syndrome, as well as medications like antidepressants, corticosteroids, and seizure medications.

Empty Calories

Empty Calories

Popular beverages like beers and sodas are chock-full of liquid calories that never fill you up. Mix in dehydration from lack of water and a poor diet, and you've got an equation that almost always equals obesity.

Constant Stress

Constant Stress

We live in a day and time where stress from work and from life is a prevalent as obesity. When you're stressed, it's easy to give in and consume unhealthy foods like candies and burritos. While doing so can give you a short spike of dopamine, it won't last. Eating sweets and fast foods is one of the worst ways to deal with stress.

Genetics

Genetics

Studies indicate that genetics can influence the development of obesity. In fact, certain genetic disorders, such as Prader-Willi syndrome, can lead directly to obesity. Genes may also make some individuals more susceptible to weight gain. However, researchers believe that other factors, such as a sedentary lifestyle or a diet rich in calorie-dense foods, are also necessary for a person to become overweight.

Sedentary

Sedentary Lifestyle

If you aren't very active on a daily basis, chances are you're eating more calories than your body is able to burn off. With the advent of smart devices and other popular entertainment options, living a sedentary life is more common than ever.

Poor Diet

Poor Diet

This one is a no-brainer. If you only eat greasy burgers and carb-packed foods, you'll continue to gain weight.

Smoking Cessation

Smoking Cessation

When you quit smoking, your body can literally breathe a breath of fresh air. However, quitting cigarettes and nicotine can also cause weight fluctuations. When left to spiral out of control, it can lead to obesity.

What are the Consequences of Living with Obesity?

Many obese Americans are shamed daily for how they look. It never feels good to be made fun of or stared at, but obese people have more to worry about than what others think. They are at risk for several fatal or long-term health issues. Many of those issues are among the leading causes of death in the U.S. Generally, the more you weigh, the greater chance you have of developing bad and even fatal complications such as:

Understanding the Dangers of Fad and Yo-Yo Diets

When you're obese and learn that you're at risk for major health events like heart attacks and strokes, it can make you anxious and want to lose weight ASAP. Unfortunately, many overweight people turn to fad diets and "lose weight quick" programs.

If you were to ask a random person on the street to name a trendy diet, they could probably name one, past or present. Diets like Paleo, South Beach Atkins, and Keto are well-known to most people. However, the issue with these diets is that they may not work for everyone, and even when they do, the outcomes are not always long-lasting.

Some common characteristics of unhealthy fad diets include:

  • Unrealistic and unhealthy weight loss practices
  • "Special" food sources that help weight "melt away"
  • Quick weight loss without needing to exercise or stick to a healthy diet
  • Fad diets are usually bad about prioritizing good nutrition. Instead, they tout extreme life choices or sketchy pills. While FDA-approved medicines such as Semaglutide injections have been shown to be effective when prescribed by a doctor, using a fad diet is counterproductive to healthy living.
  • If you're struggling with your weight, it is likely that you are feeling stressed and trying to find an effective solution. You may have already tried multiple fad diets, unsafe diet pills, or even invested in workout equipment that you never use. Yet, despite your best efforts, you're still struggling. If this sounds familiar, it could be because you never received clinical guidance at a weight loss clinic in Shiloh West, GA.
  • The most effective solution to your weight problem begins with a medical weight loss plan from Innovative Health and Wellness. Instead of following a fad diet, we encourage you to speak to one of our weight loss clinicians who can help you lose those unwanted pounds in an enjoyable, efficient manner that is tailored to your body, not someone else's.

PRINCETON – An advocate for Mercer County’s children was recognized recently by the West Virginia Child Advocacy Network (WVCAN) when she was presented the One With Courage Award.

Shiloh Woodard of Mercer County received the One With Courage Award from the West Virginia Child Advocacy Network (WVCAN) for her commitment to the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) movement in the state. The award was presented at the One With Courage Awards Reception on Sept. 12 at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.

The One With Courage Award recognizes an individual who is a staff member of a WV Child Advocacy Center and has made significant contributions to the development, continuation, or enhancement of the Children’s Advocacy Center model in their local community or to the CAC movement in the state.

Woodard has been the Executive Director of Child Protect of Mercer County for more than 17 years, according to WVCAN officials. She has grown the child advocacy center from one employee to a staff of 14 providing forensic interviews, family advocacy services, and both on-site medical and mental health to children in her community, WVCAN officials said after the presentation.

In addition to her work at Child Protect, Woodard has served multiple terms on the WVCAN Board of Directors and recently completed a 3-year term as board president. As President, she helped guide the Network through the pandemic, federal funding shortfalls, and a Membership & Board strategic planning process.

“I am humbled and honored to be recognized with WVCAN’s One with Courage Award. I deeply value the work of children’s advocacy centers, and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be able to work alongside so many committed, caring professionals in this field locally in Mercer County as well as across West Virginia,” Woodard said.

“Shiloh exemplifies true dedication and compassion through her work,” said Kate Flack, Chief Executive Officer of the West Virginia Child Advocacy Network. “Child Protect has thrived and grown under her leadership to better serve children in their community.”

Dacula High School was the location of a two-day padded camp with various schools, including the likes of Archer, Shiloh, Apalachee, and Buford High School. Dylan Raiola, the No. 1 quarterback in the country and new Buford Wolf, participated in the event and joined Dawgs Daily afterward to answer a few questions.

West Coast football is very different than the type of football that is played in the Southeast. There is an entire offensive scheme based on the type of football played out west, and it is a heavy air raid system. You often see spread offenses in the Southeast, like in the West, but they are a variation of a pro-style playbook rather than an air raid.

Raiola noticed this when asked about differences he has noticed throughout the camp compared to out west.

"It's a different brand of football out here. The o-line/d-line firing off the ball. We made it a point to establish the line of scrimmage; that's what we did - The pace is obviously faster. The offensive system is exactly what I need, a pro-style system. So it's been great so far."

Georgia Bulldogs football is known for those two things in particular—a pro-style offensive system combined with mammoth offensive and defensive linemen that establish the line of scrimmage. As many say, that is where football games are won, in the trenches.

Kirby Smart and Stacy Searels understand that, and they went out and got three of the best offensive linemen in the country within the last couple of weeks, Daniel Calhoun, Nyler Daniels, and Marques Easely. As many know, the three players mentioned all stand over 6' 6", but Raiola noted there's more to them than just their measurables.

"Throughout the whole recruiting process, we've stayed in touch and kind of just kept recruiting them. But, y'know they're all great guys. Everyone sees the measurables - sees them as football players - but at the end of the day they're all great people. People that you want to be around, people that you trust, and people that you want leading your team. The offensive line/d-line leads the teams."

The Dawgs have great leaders at all levels of offense and defense, one of these players is Malaki Starks. I asked Raiola if any of the current Georgia players had reached out to him with any words of advice for his senior year that he is heading into a new state, the name that got mentioned was Malaki Starks.

"I talked to Malaki Starks, he went to Jefferson, and he just said 'Enjoy your senior year. You get one senior year and one opportunity to be with all of your guys. You'll remember this season for the rest of your life so just cherish every moment that's provided.'"

Raiola ended the conversation with an emphatic "Go Dawgs!" He will be heading into his senior season alongside Eddrick Houston, the No. 4 rated defensive lineman for 2024, and KJ Bolden, the No. 1 rated safety for the 2024 class, and a player Smart is trying to land on the recruiting trail.

A gym in west Fayetteville has permanently closed after its building changed hands for the second time this year.

Iconix Fayetteville, located at 2736 W McMillan Dr. and formerly known as Fitness One, officially closed for business on Thursday, May 11.

The building will soon be home to Cross Church College (CTHREE), a college ministry affiliated with neighboring Cross Church.

The building was originally constructed on property once owned by Cross Church. The church built their current campus, an estimated $18-19 million, 57,500-square-foot facility, on a portion of the property, and sold a portion to WCG Wedington for $2.4 million in 2016 for construction of the Fitness One gym. The gym opened in 2018, and operated there for around four years.

Fitness One sold the property in January for $9.69 million to Maverick Decatur Georgia, a Georgia-based LLC affiliated with California-based gym, Iconix Fitness who had planned to convert the business practices and branding to match its location in Long Beach.

After the transition to the new company over the winter and early spring, members and staff learned a few weeks ago that the property had sold once again, and the gym would be permanently closing on May 11.

This time, according to Washington County property records, the building sold for $16 million on April 26 to McMillan & Wedington LLC, a company that lists Springdale attorney Kenneth Hall as the registered agent.

That weekend, Cross Church announced their plans to utilize the building for their CTHREE college branch at a service held on April 30. During the service, members of the church walked over to tour the facility that evening.

Shortly after that, a notice was placed on the door of the gym indicating that it would be closed. Staff and members of the gym told us they were not notified of the building sale and closure of the business prior to the announcement during the church service on April 30.

“A local institution had a need for this location to do important work for the community,” the notice on the door of the building read. “The message they put forth and the good that will come to the (sic) Fayetteville as a result will be immeasurable.”

According to the notice, billing for gym members ceased on April 15, and the gym remained open at no charge to members through May 11. Annual memberships paid in advance were credited back to the members on a prorated bases, the notice said.

It is unclear whether Cross Church has an ownership stake in McMillan & Wedington, LLC.

According to their website, Fitness One still operates locations in Lowell, Arkansas and in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Cross Church started as First Baptist Springdale before rebranding to their new name in 2010. The Southern Baptist-affiliated church operates three locations in NWA, including the original location in Springdale, in Rogers, and the Fayetteville campus. The church is also affiliated with Shiloh Christian schools, a private christian schools with campuses associated with their locations in Springdale and Rogers.

After the name change, the church opened their first Fayetteville location in a strip mall on Wedington Drive in 2010. They expanded to the current site after two Cross Church members purchased nine acres near the I-49 interchange in November 2014.
