If you are looking for a chiropractor in Woodstock GA or Buckhead GA please give our office a call at 770-926-4646. We will get you on our schedule and hopefully get you back to feeling better as soon as possible. It is estimated that approximately 8 out of 10 people will experience back pain at some point in their lives. As a result of this, many people experience back pain and are not sure how to treat it. Most people will rest and may take some over the counter medicine at first. If you have tried this and the pain does not go away, don’t wait for it to get worse. Get checked out by one of our trained chiropractors in Woodstock GA or Buckhead GA and start the process of healing. Many published guidelines recommend starting chiropractic treatment early in the care of low back pain.
What to expect when going to a chiropractor-Initially it will be not much different than going to any other doctor. A lot of information will be asked, a history of your primary complaint and then an evaluation will take place. The evaluation will check to see the mechanical functioning of the spine and see if there are any restrictions and areas of particular pain. If necessary X-rays will be taken.
After that depending on what the evaluation reveals it is time to get treated. The chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is usually done by hand or with a hand held instrument. It is never designed to be painful, but we explain to our patients if you have never had it done it is “different.” After getting adjusted,it is common to do some light stretching and possibly apply some ice to the affected area. The entire process should be very comforting and most of time offer some sought after relief.
Depending on the severity of the particular low back pain, recommendations will be given on when to return, and specific at home instructions will be given.
Low back pain can be debilitating and should never be taken lightly. If you experience it and it does not go away it is always prudent to get evaluated by a quality professional. In our office we employ both medical doctors, chiropractors and nurse practitioners so we offer an integrated approach to dealing with low back pain. If you or a loved one is suffering with low back pain please contact one of our offices in Woodstock GA or Buckhead GA and let us help you alleviate the dreadful low back pain experience.

What exactly does a chiropractor do? Woodstock Chiropractor

As I have been in practice for over twenty years this is a question that there is a lot of misconceptions about: what exactly does a chiropractor do? I have been a practicing chiropractor in Woodstock Georgia for over 20 years and I have treated thousands of patients in Woodstock and the surrounding Atlanta areas.

To answer this question we must first evaluate and explain that chiropractors find and detect misalignments in the spine. We do this by a variety of methods including but not limited to; physical examination, x-rays, thermal scanning, range of motion studies and more.

Once we have determined that a misalignment is present, we can then adequately address the misalignment and treat it appropriately. This then begs the question-what exactly does a chiropractor do to treat the misalignment? This is where there is a lot of misinformation. What we do, is we use our hands or an instrument to adjust the misaligned vertebrae back into its normal alignment. Some potential new patients think that we “pop and crack” bones back into place. This creates a lot of fear in potentially new patients who have never been adjusted before. The truth is that when doing manual adjustments a patient may hear a “cracking” sound which is  not the bones “cracking.” It is simply the release of nitrogenous gas in the joint. It is the equivalent of packaging bubbles that are filled with compressed air that when pressed create a “popping sound.” For patients that do not feel comfortable with this type of adjustment we offer lower force adjustments with instruments that do not create any “popping sound.” Either way, the goal is not to necessarily hear anything but to return the misaligned vertebrae back to its normal alignment. From my experience, the adjustment should never, ever hurt. It should actually feel really good.

The difference with our chiropractic office in Woodstock Georgia is that we also have medical professionals on staff. We have a medical office in which we also do chiropractic care. This should give added assurance to any new potential patients that we are very concerned about your overall health and make sure we are diligent in making sure that our patients are good candidates for chiropractic care .Once we accept you as a patient we are very confident that we can help you with a wide array of ailments that you may be suffering from : back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, headaches, tight and uncomfortable muscular pains and a whole host of other similar ailments.

In addition, I have spent my entire adult life in the fitness industry and I am an avid exercise/yoga person. I incorporate that into the chiropractic treatments that we provide. We do this so that we can reach our mission of “transforming our patients lives so they have the absolute highest quality of life possible,”

If you are looking for a chiropractor in Woodstock Georgia, look no further. Give our office a call we have a 24/7 call center that can get you in to see if chiropractic can help you! Please give us a call or comment below with any questions you may have-(770) 926-4646

Migraine Treatments: Part 2

Here at Innovations Health, we’re dedicated to providing you with the quality chiropractic pain management you need. This is why we’re talking about practical treatments for a common everyday pain that many people have to manage. Last time, we discussed the benefits of chiropractic practice on the body to assist with migraines. In this article, we’ll discuss the hormone replacement treatment for migraines, as well as other holistic options for your in-between appointment migraine issues.

Hormone Replacement Therapy for Migraines

Since most migraines are caused and exasperated by hormone fluctuations, hormone therapy could prove to be beneficial for the treatment of your symptoms. If you do go down this path, it’s crucial that you tell your hormone therapist about your inclination to migraines, especially those who experience aura. Migraines with aura will, again, be accompanied by troubles seeing, numbness, trouble finding words and speaking, and potentially smelling things that aren’t there. This is important because your hormone therapy will have to be regulated. Though, recent studies have pointed to hormone therapy being a perfectly safe form of treatment for women with migraines with aura, it should be noted that harsh hormone manipulation has a small chance of increasing the probability of a stroke. Which is why you should be extremely careful when taking pregnancy prevention measures, and carefully avoid hormone manipulation on top of whatever you’re using to treat your migraines.

Other treatments

Triggers

Avoid triggers, as previously mentioned, red wine is a major culprit for triggering migraines because it possesses a chemical called tyramine. This chemical will work to activate serotonin levels, which is why wine makes you feel good. But in an unbalanced environment it can trigger a migraine, which no one wants. You’ll have to watch out for certain medications, such as the pre-mentioned birth control pills as the hormones will almost certainly set off migraines. Other medications to be wary of are those with a nausea side effect, a lot of the time the heat and turmoil your body experiences while nauseous will cause a migraine. Other triggers will come in the form of fatigue, sickness and hunger. Your body is already overcompensating when these things occur and it can push it over the edge into the migraine danger zone. Stress is a definite cause of migraines, as well as hormone level changes. This is why women are particularly susceptible during their menstruation period.

Beyond chiropractic and hormone therapy treatments for your chronic migraines, you may want to play with some at home remedies for a more immediate response to a migraine so it doesn’t manage to ruin your day, as they can at times. The first thing you should do in the interim between your appointments for chiropractic migraine management or hormone therapy treatment is find some treatments that work for you. In that regard, we have a few tips to help you relieve your symptoms.

Signals

Begin with reading your body’s signals to you. Look for strange food cravings, mainly salt, and sugar. Observe your energy levels and mood changes, if you’re getting randomly cranky that point to a hormone flux which could be the onset of a migraine. Watch out for feeling stiff for no reason, especially in your neck, and having a strange need to urinate more often. Constipation and diarrhea aren’t only just unpleasant after-effects of bad food choices, they also might be warning signs that you’re going to get a horrible migraine soon.

Pain Relief

Start off with prescription strength ibuprofen, or 4 100mg tablets at the onset of a migraine. This will act as an extremely efficient anti-inflammatory which will help with your shrinking blood vessels. It’ll help as a blood thinner as well, because it’s much easier to push a thinner liquid through a tiny tube rather than a thick, sluggish substance.

Another thing that will almost always help, in fact, it seems to be the only thing most people with migraines can agree on, is to go sit in a dark, quiet room. Cold compresses or on painful areas will relieve some of the discomforts as well.

Essential Oils

You might try scent stimulations to assist with your symptoms. Many report results with lavender, basil oil, and eucalyptus. These can be applied to your temples, your pulse points for throughout the day stimulation ( you’ll also smell really good), or under your nose like a mentholated topical ointment.

Alter Your Diet

As a long-term solution, you might consider testing out what sort of food acts a trigger for you and actively avoiding those foods. A couple of major ones to look out for consist of dairy products, high-fat fruits -like avocado, citrus, and meats with nitrates like bacon and hot dogs. Recent studies have pointed to a couple chemicals acting as reactants that appear in food like monosodium glutamate, tyramine, and anything that’s been fermented. The major offenders are unfortunately peanut butter and chocolate and onions. So avoid everything you enjoy and you’ll probably be fine, or take a migraine. After all, there’s always eucalyptus and ibuprofen.

Migraine Treatments: Part 1

At Innovative Health and Wellness, we proudly help relieve many adverse effects of the conditions you deal with on a day-to-day basis. If you are one of the thousands of people who suffer from regular migraines, ocular migraines, or migraines with aura then consider trying some of our services! With multiple studies backing the relevance of our treatments in relation to preventing and helping the frequency of migraines, we’re not just blowing smoke.

If you go to a doctor and complain of migraines, they’ll prescribe pills for you, probably a couple different kinds, and then they’ll mention that “different things work for different people.” We’re sorry Doc, but this isn’t the 1950s anymore, and very few people nowadays believe in the mantra: better living through chemical dependency. As with any chiropractic practice, we’re looking to give you long-term solutions to long-term problems, Innovations Health is not looking to hook you on medication.

The Science

If you look at what’s often happening when you’re having a migraine, it’s kinda scary. It’s generally caused by estrogen and serotonin reacting with each other. In severe migraines with symptoms like loss of vision, numbness and loss of speech capabilities, the brain’s blood vessels are shrinking and mimicking a stroke. This is why all of the symptoms above are stroke symptoms, but you’ll be able to raise your arms above your head, and rest assured, you’re not losing brain cells, you’re just having a really bad day. Serotonin is that chemical in your brain responsible for widening or shrinking those blood vessels and depending on the concentration of estrogen, and the fluctuation of that concentration, it can set off the serotonin secretion to over-compensate and what results is a migraine. This is why women are far more likely to experience migraines. In men, it’s only the changing serotonin levels that are what causes this discomfort.

There are quite a few triggers for this reaction. But all of them are mostly guesses at what causes this to happen. The most reliable causes, which have been cross-referenced and studied are stress, mood swings, hormonal shifts, exposure to certain frequencies of light, smells, changes in sleep patterns, weather changes (mostly low-pressure systems coming in), and certain food and drinks like cheese and wine for example. However, all of these “causes” are like the pills you’ll be prescribed, they work differently for everyone.

Chiropractic Migraine Management

From the above scientific discoveries, we can draw a few conclusions and make some connections. During the chiropractic process, we manipulate the tissues and components of your body by adjusting bones and joints; we can manipulate and help how the blood vessels function. Most patients find improved blood pressure after having chiropractic adjustments done, which directly affects how your blood vessels respond, and how much blood goes to your brain. This notion has been proved by 21 different studies, which with varying control groups, found that patients who sought chiropractic care twice a week for around eight weeks found an extreme improvement in their systems. The measured symptoms that found some resolution included the intensity of a migraine, duration, and frequency of the migraines.

A Comprehensive Guide to Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women

At Innovative Health and Wellness Center, we offer hormone replacement therapy for a variety of reasons. For our female patients, we most typically use it as a treatment of menopausal symptoms, as well as symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). You may have hesitations about hormone replacement therapy, but when administered properly and for the right reasons, it is perfectly safe and can be quite effective. Read on to learn more about hormone replacement therapy for women and how it may help you.

What is hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?

Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, is a treatment that is used to address abnormal hormone levels. In women, this comes either in the form of estrogen therapy (ET) or estrogen with progesterone therapy (EPT).

Why hormone replacement therapy?

Estrogen and progesterone both play important roles in the body. In the reproductive system, together, the two hormones thicken the lining of the uterus to facilitate egg implantation. Estrogen also helps the body process calcium, maintain healthy cholesterol levels, and aids in vaginal health.

When menopause begins, the amount of these two crucial hormones drops. This is what causes menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, pain with intercourse, mood swings, trouble sleeping, and vaginal dryness. It can also put you at greater risk of osteoporosis. Hormone replacement therapy supplements these hormones, easing menopausal symptoms and protecting against osteoporosis.

Additionally, hormone replacement therapy may be used to help women with polycystic ovarian syndrome to manage their symptoms. PCOS is a hormonal disorder experienced by women of reproductive age that can cause symptoms such as irregular menstrual periods, acne, and excess facial hair. Women with PCOS often come into our clinic for hormone replacement therapy to address their symptoms.

What is the difference between the different types of therapy?

Estrogen-only therapy, or ET, is prescribed for surgical menopause and provides the most relief from menopausal symptoms. Surgical menopause occurs when a woman has a hysterectomy and therefore, doesn’t have a uterus.

Estrogen-progesterone therapy (EPT) is a treatment that uses both estrogen and progesterone. Progesterone is added in order to protect women with a uterus from endometrial cancer, as estrogen alone can cause it.

How do you take hormone replacement therapy?

In general, there are two ways to take hormone replacement therapy:

  • Systemic products: this type of treatment is goes through the bloodstream to other parts of the body. They can be given through oral pills, patches, gels, sprays, emulsions, or injections and are used to treat night sweats, hot flashes, and vaginal symptoms, as well as combat osteoporosis.
  • Local products: in contrast, this type of treatment is only directed at a specific area of the body and come in the form of a cream, tablet or ring. In general, these are used to treat vaginal symptoms.

What are the benefits?

There are hundreds of research studies that suggest that systemic hormone replacement therapy is effective in treating vaginal dryness, hot flashes, bone loss, and night sweats, which can also lead to improved sleep, sex, and quality of life. HRT may be most effective for women who experience vaginal dryness, hot flashes, and night sweats.

Hormone replacement therapy may be able to help you with your symptoms. To find out more, contract Innovative Health and Wellness in Buckhead today.

The brain releases hormones that stimulate testosterone production, as well as a second hormone that regulates the release of testosterone. 4 Teas That Help With Weight Loss

If you are trying to lose weight, you have probably read all about different foods and beverages that will help with weight loss. In reality, a calorie deficit as well as physical activity is what you need in order to lose weight. It doesn’t matter if you drink lemon water and cayenne pepper, if you are also eating four donuts a day and not working out, you will not lose weight. However, there is evidence that suggests that there are certain teas that are associated with weight loss. Alongside a medical weight loss program, drinking the following teas may prove to be helpful during your weight loss journey.

White Tea

In the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, a recent research study found a correlation between drinking white tea and losing weight. While more research needs to be conducted, the current theory is that white tea blocks the formation of new fat cells while simultaneously speeding lipolysis, the process the body uses to break down stored fats. White tea is also a good source of catechins, an antioxidant that speeds the process of the liver creating energy from fat, and released fat cells, particularly around the belly. Incorporating white tea into your diet may help speed the belly fat burning process.

Green Tea

You have probably heard that green tea is good for you, but you may not realize that it could also be helpful with weight loss. Participants in a recent research study who drank green tea while dieting and exercising lost more weight than participants who used diet and exercise alone. This is probably for similar reasons as white tea, as green tea also contains catechins.

Mint Tea

Mint is a natural appetite suppressant, making mint tea full of potential when it comes to weight loss. For some reason, the smell of peppermint has proven to reduce cravings, which makes it easier to stick with your diet plan. In one study published in the Journal of Neurological and Orthopedic Medicine, when participants smelled peppermint every two hours, they lost an average of five pounds a month. If you are someone who struggles with late-night snacking, try drinking a cup of peppermint tea to suppress your appetite. Some people will even put a few drops of peppermint oil on their pillow to quell their desire for a midnight snack.

Rooibos Tea

Rooibos tea has enjoyed a recent upsurge in popularity, but you may still never have tried it. Rooibos comes from the South African red bush plant. Rooibos may help with weight loss because it contains a flavonoid called aspalathin. Aspalathin reduces the production of stress hormones that contribute to hunger and fat storage and are associated with a variety of health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Sipping rooibos tea daily may help control these hormones, reducing your fat composition.

While these teas could help with weight loss when paired with a fitness program and diet, drinking them alone will not help you lose weight. If you live in Buckhead and are looking to lose weight, our medical weight loss clinic has helped many of our patients lose significantly amounts of weight. Contact us today to learn more about medical weight loss in Buckhead!

Relieve Headaches with Chiropractic Care

Anyone who’s ever suffered from a headache knows how painful they can be. Yet there are a variety of headaches which have different symptoms and side effects. Thankfully, chiropractic adjustments are a great treatment for headaches. Not only does chiropractic help reduce the pain and discomfort a headache can cause, receiving regular chiropractic care helps to minimize the frequency at which a headache strikes. Additionally, consistent chiropractic adjustments helps you manage the symptoms attributed with headaches. At Innovative Health & Wellness, helping you maintain your health and wellness is of the utmost importance.

Common Types of Headaches

Below is a list of some of the most common types of headaches that people suffer from regularly:

  • Tension

Tension headaches are the most common headaches caused by muscle contraction of the head, face, and neck. Whether brought on by long hours spent staring at a computer screen, or a painful side-effect of stress, tension headaches trigger mild to moderate pressure, and can last from a few minutes to several hours. Many people describe tension headaches as a dull, continuous pain that forms a band around the head and behind the eyes.

  • Migraines

Anyone who’s ever suffered from a migraine knows just how painful and debilitating they can be. Migraine headaches are a more chronic condition which affect people in different ways. Migraine symptoms include severe throbbing, pulsating, or pounding pain in a focused area of the head and are generally one-sided. Eye pain, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, sound, and/or smell, visual impairments like auras, and intense pain often accompany migraines. Stress, food allergies, dehydration, changes in barometric pressure, injuries, and even heredity can trigger these painful headaches. Migraines typically last anywhere from a few hours to, in the most severe cases, several days.

  • Headaches from Colds, Sinuses, and Allergies

Colds, sinus infections, and allergies trigger headaches related to nasal and sinus

congestion. Sinus swelling and nasal passage blockage causes pressure to build in the sinuses, which often leads to painful, pulsating headaches that generally involve one side of the face and head. Like migraines, these headaches can impair the vision due to the increased amount of pressure experienced around the eyes. These headaches vary in duration.

How Does Chiropractic Care Relieve Headaches?

After receiving a thorough examination, our chiropractors will determine the best method for treating your individual headache needs. Muscle work and spinal manipulation (spinal adjustment) help realign the spine and reduce stress, while also improving spinal and nervous system function. Not only do our compassionate chiropractors treat your headache during an office visit, they also provide you with nutritional insights for healthy eating habits, make recommendations for improving your posture and sleep patterns, while also offering treatments that address allergy-related headaches.

At-Home Care In Between Chiropractic Adjustments

While there are different causes for a variety of headaches, one sure way to help reduce a headache during your day is by stretching your neck, shoulders, and back to help decrease muscle tension that contributes to headaches. Avoid clenching your teeth while working or at night when you’re sleeping, which minimize muscle tension in the face, head, and neck. Additionally, staying hydrated helps reduce the risk for tension and migraine headaches.

If you suffer from headaches and are seeking a holistic approach to treating and relieving associated symptoms, please contact our experienced team of healthcare professionals at Innovative Health & Wellness in Buckhead. We look forward to helping you heal.
