Any East Coast skier will tell you that a winter trip to their neck of the woods will be whatever you make of it. Perhaps no resort on the East Coast does more with less than Seven Springs. What the southwestern Pennsylvania resort lacks in natural gifts, it makes up for elsewhere. Of the resort’s 285 acres, 200 are open for night skiing (until 9 or 10 p.m.) and all are maintained by snowmaking. Green trails are positioned well, so there’s no threat of some hot-dogger taking out beginners at 85 mph. The mountain is close to a variety of nearby lodging and offers enough amenities to keep everyone happy, even through uninspiring Mid-Atlantic winters. But these amenities come at a cost. The resort is expensive for what it is. But at the end of the day, this little resort offers something many of the big dogs can’t: A quick escape. Berkeley Springs, West Virginia

Located just 90 minutes from the Washington/Baltimore metro, this tiny West Virginia town has dubbed itself “America’s First Spa” thanks to its famous natural hot springs. Wade in the ancient stone pools at Berkeley Springs State Park, where spa services and soaking options abound. The Main Bathhouse’s private Roman Bath features 750 gallons of mineral water straight from the spring heated to 102 degrees. Once you’ve gotten a good soak in, be sure to explore the rest of the park to see more of the natural mineral springs and take in the gorgeous mountain views.

Warm Springs Pools in Hot Springs, Virginia

These historic hot springs in Hot Spring, Virginia, have been in use since at least 1761, when they were first opened to the public, and likely were used long before then. Today the springs are managed by the Omni Homestead Resort, who are committed to maintaining their historical integrity and keeping them in operation. After a $4 million renovation, the multisided bath houses are once again open to anyone looking for a historically good soak. Reservations are required, and guests can choose between gender-specific soaks, adult co-ed soaks, and family soaks for at a rate of $25 for 50 minutes.

Choose between two places to soak in this small Western North Carolina town. The Hot Springs Resort and Spa features 100 acres of uninterrupted beauty. The resort pumps jetted hot tubs full of the famous mineral water and places them all along the tranquil banks of Spring Creek and the French Broad River, so you can reserve your own personal oasis by the hour. If you choose to stay on property, many of the cabins and suites come equipped with their own private mineral tubs. Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

For the quintessential Southern hot springs experience, put Hot Springs National Park in central Arkansas on the top of your Southern Wonders bucket list. The park is known for its stellar outdoor adventure thanks to its location in the Ouachita Mountains on the Ouachita River. But the biggest draw is the 4,000-year-old spring water found in its natural state. Known for its endless acres of mountainous desert terrain and otherworldly rock formations, Big Bend is a certified geological wonder that has been dazzling outdoor enthusiasts for more than 80 years. The park’s Hot Springs Historic District is home to a large outdoor hot springs tub that’s made by the remnants of the old Langford Bathhouse dating back more than 100 years. The famous springs there take the form of a giant single pool that was formed 30,000 years ago by a giant sinkhole and measures 200 feet deep. Visitors can soak, swim, and even scuba dive in the deeply mystical waters. SEVEN SPRINGS — The life and history of this small riverside town are closely intertwined with the Neuse River, but over the past 23 years hurricane-spawned river flooding has left Seven Springs, Wayne County’s oldest municipality, struggling to survive. Now, town leaders are hopeful that their neighbors from across the county will join town residents at a Dec. 1 meeting to support their efforts to secure a share of $15 million in state grant funding. The funding will be used for revitalization projects — some of which will be tied to the recreational opportunities the Neuse River provides. The meeting will be held at 11 a.m. at Granddaughter’s Venue on Main Street. “So this is open to anybody, you don’t have to live in Seven Springs,” Mayor Ronda Hughes said. The town’s application is among the 20 still under consideration. If the state were to fund all 20 applications, it would total $21 million, Hughes said. Seven Springs is hoping for $350,000, she said. Hughes said she is unsure of the meeting format and if those who attend will have a time to comment. “We are just kind of playing it by ear,” she noted. “We have applied for a bunch of grants, but this is one where we are down to the final 20. We actually have more people coming who are doing the approving of the grants because we have so many (state) representatives coming. “We’ve got (state House Majority Leader) John Bell (of Goldsboro) coming. (State) Rep. Jimmy Dixon (of Mount Olive) is coming. We have county commissioners coming. We’ve got some of the grant writers coming and it’s open to the public, anybody who wants to show their support.” The grant that will be discussed is for storm drainage improvements and for outdoor improvement projects that build on the town’s history and its association with the Neuse River, including the seven mineral springs that the town takes its name from, she pointed out. “We are looking at maybe a walking path on the lot across from the park and then it (grant) plays, too, on the history,” Hughes said. “So inside that walking path, we are looking at a replica of the pavilion down at the springs, but it will be a picnic area. “Also the spring house that has the seven wells in it, the plans are that in the seven wells replica we would actually be able to turn it on and off so at times it actually would have water in it.” The plans also include a walk-and-read story path; more RV camper lots; and improvements to the town’s existing park, she said. There is much history associated with the town, Hughes said. Seven Springs was originally known as Whitehall and later White Hall after the plantation of William Whitefield who established his plantation in 1741. It was site of the Civil War Battle of White Hall in December 1862, and the Confederate Ironclad CSS Neuse was built in Seven Springs in 1863. When a post office was established in 1881, the name was changed to Jehrico, and in 1894 the name was changed to Seven Springs. The town gets its name from the seven mineral springs that were the basis of the Seven Springs Hotel. The hotel began operation in 1881 and closed in 1944. The area was home to a tribe of Native-Americans, too, Hughes said. “We had a doctor’s office,” she said. “We had buggy factories. We had tar factories. We had blacksmith shops. We had the hotel. “I mean there was just so much going on in that little town.” However, historic flooding caused by Hurricanes Floyd (1999), Matthew (2016) and Florence (2018) devastated homes and the small downtown area. Prior to the storms, the town had between 130 and 140 residents. In the storms’ aftermaths, the population has shrunk to about 75, she said. Most of the houses lost to the flooding were in the valley where the town proper is located, Hughes said, adding that because of the town’s senior population, most of the houses were single-person households, she said. If the town does not get the full $350,000, it will still welcome whatever funding is forthcoming, she said. The town will just have to pick and choose what’s the most important — what will help it the most, Hughes stressed. “I am not sure because we have not got down to the final decision,” she said. “I think it’s January through March sometime when they will let us know if we made the cut. They (state) will probably try to fill as much as they can because they are trying to help as many different communities as possible. “Even without the flooding, COVID has hit people so hard. With that being said, we don’t know yet what are the specifics about the grant because you won’t know that till you get the grant.” The town might be able to stretch whatever funding it receives if approved work comes in under the estimated cost, she said. Hughes said she understands that the state received 75 applications. She said she feels good that the town has made it to the final 20 being considered. “I hope we make it to the final whatever it is,” she stressed. She is hoping as well that county residents will attend the meeting to demonstrate their support for the application since the projects will benefit the entire area and not just Seven Springs. “Like the walking path,” Hughes said. “The people who live in Seven Springs won’t be the only ones who use it. “But that (community support) is kind of what we are hoping for.”

Residents of Georgia first became aware of the healing powers of Warm Springs, then named Bullochville, in the late 1700s as a way to escape yellow fever. But the springs are best known as the place were Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32^nd President, came to rest and recuperate. Roosevelt first experienced the soothing mineral springs, which flow at a comfortable 88-degree temperature, to treat the pain and paralysis resulting from polio. After that first visit, he came as often as he could, exercising and swimming in the water to regain the strength in his legs. Subsequently he purchased the resort and surrounding area, founded a polio hospital and renamed the town Warm Springs. The town is still home to the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. Although the springs are no longer available for public use, the mineral water is used therapeutically by those attending the Roosevelt Institute.

It is said that Bernadette Soubirous, a Saint in the Catholic Church, was led to the source of the spring by a vision of Our Lady of Lourdes in 1858 and told to “drink at the spring and bathe in it.” Today, the original spring can be seen within the Grotto, protected by a glass screen. Visitors collect water dispensed from a series of taps that surround the base. Each year millions visit the site for healing and many have claimed to have been cured of illnesses and afflctions–some of which make it through a lengthy and thorough investigative process and are deemed miracles by the Catholic Church. On February 12, 2018, the 70th miracle healing was recorded as having occurred at the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes.

This natural spring in Blackville, South Carolina has the unusual distinction of being legally owned by God. When the Spaniards discovered the springs, they named it “Ojo Caliente,” which translates to “warm eye.” Today, thousands make the trip to this special destination to experience relaxation and rejuvenation.

This new age spa is an amazing result of technology meets natural phenomenon. Located in Eastern Germany, in the town of Weimar, the calming effect of the natural warm salt water is mixed with sounds and music inspired by singing whales that can be heard underwater. Created by Micky Remann, the idea was sparked while researching musical interactions with Orca whales, and developed a way to create underwater sound for people. The springs come from an ancient underground ocean that enables guests to easily float as if in the Dead Sea. A futuristic dome houses seven pools that become a canvas for a relaxing experience dubbed “Liquid Sound.”

Rich in minerals, the blue waters of Pamukkale Turkey have been known to have healing powers for centuries. The springs foam and drip slowly down the vast mountainside, flowing over stalactites into pools. According to legend, these beautiful white formations are solid cotton that giants left out to dry. And if the amazing natural formations weren’t enough to bring tourists, a 12,000 seat amphitheater is located right above the healing waters.
