Atlanta, GA — After about four days, the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management has lifted the boil advisory that was in place following a water main break at Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and J.P. Brawley Drive on Friday, May 31.

The water main break on Joseph E. Boone has been repaired. The break involved a transmission main that moves a considerable amount of water throughout Atlanta.

Sampling confirmed the city’s public water can be used for all purposes and does not need to be boiled anymore, according to a press release.

“The City’s drinking water meets or exceeds standards established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as required by the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act,” The Georgia Environmental Protection Division has been notified.”

A boil advisory remains in effect, however, for the midtown area near West Peachtree and 11th Streets and neighborhoods in East Atlanta, according to a press release. At 9:55 p.m. on May 31, Atlanta Watershed shared on X/Twitter that, “A potential water main break is being investigated near the intersection of W. Peachtree St. NW & 11th St. NE. It could result in a temporary disruption of water service for residents and businesses. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”

Atlanta Watershed shared photos from the site earlier today and has shared no other updates on social media as of about 10:55 p.m. on Monday. Repairs on West Peachtree Street are ongoing. Several water main breaks have occurred over the last four days and the city is working to make those emergency repairs. To learn more about the breaks, click here.

Mayor Andre Dickens has also engaged with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to assist with the repairs. They will have boots on the ground starting on Tuesday, June 4.

“We have sought their assistance because they have the most experience in handling a crisis like this,” Dickens said. They will help us develop a plan to assess and evaluate our aging infrastructure.”

Atlanta, GA — The city of Atlanta is still grappling with water main breaks following a major main break on Friday, May 31, at Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and J.P. Brawley Drive in downtown Atlanta. Some repairs have been made so far, and another break was reported near Clayton Road and Armour Drive on June 3.

The water main break on Joseph E. Boone has been repaired. Watershed is investigating the break on Clayton Road. A boil advisory for metro Atlanta remains in effect. The boil advisory includes parts of Kirkwood, East Lake, Oakhurst and other areas in Atlanta. To see the map of the impacted area, click here. DeKalb County repaired a six-inch water main break on Nichols Lane near McAfee Road in greater Decatur as well, but DeKalb has a separate water system and it’s unlikely the breaks in DeKalb and Atlanta are related. Reports on social media indicated some residents in DeKalb are experiencing outages, but there was no official number from DeKalb. Residents on Yucca Drive and Katherine Valley Road said they have no water on Monday afternoon. A spokesperson for DeKalb County said Yucca Drive, Katherine Valley Road and McAfee Road may have been impacted.

The break in DeKalb occurred after days of water outages in Atlanta, next door.

Here’s a look at what has happened in Atlanta over the last few days:

– The first break on Joseph E. Boone Boulevard was to a transmission main that moves a considerable amount of water through the city. Decaturish first published this story on Friday morning, May 31. Two more breaks were reported later that day.

– At 9:55 p.m. on May 31, Atlanta Watershed shared on X/Twitter that, “A potential water main break is being investigated near the intersection of W. Peachtree St. NW & 11th St. NE. It could result in a temporary disruption of water service for residents and businesses. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”

– Atlanta Watershed tweeted again at 10:15 p.m. on Friday that a potential water main break was being investigated near 1190 Atlantic Drive NW that could also result in temporary water service disruption for businesses and residents.

– Another main break was reported at 2922 Glenwood Avenue earlier on Friday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

– On Saturday morning, crews could be seen working at the break near Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW. Near 8 a.m., workers hefted what appeared to be part of a pipe out of the ground, cheering and hugging each other afterward, ANF reported.

— The city of Atlanta and DeKalb County handed out bottled water to those impacted on Saturday. DeKalb County will continue distributing bottled water on Sunday, June 2, beginning at 7 a.m. at the Atlanta-DeKalb Human Services Complex at 30 Warren Street. According to a press release from the county, DeKalb County Fire Rescue also sent a 3,000-gallon tanker to help the city of Atlanta amid the water main break.

– The emergency repairs on Joseph E. Boone were completed around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 1. Atlanta Watershed Commissioner Al Wiggins, Jr., and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens also announced the completion of the repairs on Boone Boulevard around 10 p.m. on Saturday during a press conference.

– Repairs were completed at 1190 Atlantic Drive around 8:43 p.m. on June 1.

– An eight-inch water main break was reported at 4370 Minkslide Drive SW at 8:58 p.m. on June 1. The water was turned off to make repairs. This break impacted about 35 homes, according to Atlanta Watershed’s X/Twitter page. The repairs were finished around 11:58 p.m.

– Crews worked through the night on Saturday to repair the break at West Peachtree and 11th Streets. West Peachtree is closed between 10th and 12th Streets.

– Another potential break occurred at 1190 Atlanta Drive NW around 12:33 p.m. on Sunday, June 2.

– Watershed was also investigating a break at Euclid and North Avenues around 12:45 p.m. A six-inch water main was turned off around 3 p.m. on Sunday to make these repairs. About 35 homes and four hydrants were impacted. The repairs were completed around 4:11 p.m.

– As of 4 a.m. on Monday, June 3, Watershed crews were still working on repairs at West Peachtree and 11th Streets. Crews turned off a six-inch water main at this location around 10 a.m. for repairs. According to Watershed, two apartment complexes and one hydrant were impacted, the department shared on X/Twitter.

According to the press release from this morning, crews began working on the repair around 1 a.m.

“As part of the repairs, crews will shut off 36-inch and 30-inch water mains, resulting in a temporary interruption of water service on the streets listed below: 11th Street from West Peachtree [Street] to Peachtree [Street] and West Peachtree [Street] from 10th [Street] to 12th [Street],” the press release says. “Traffic control measures and signs are in place to guide motorists around the work zone. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to avoid the area if possible.”

Water is available at Fire Station No. 11 at 165 16th Street and Station No. 15 at 170 10th Street. DeKalb County also began distributing bottled water around 1 p.m. DeKalb residents impacted by Atlanta’s water main breaks. Water is available at the Atlanta-DeKalb Human Services Complex, located at 30 Warren Street.

– Another water main break was reported near Clayton Road Northeast and Armour Drive Northeast around 12:39 p.m. on Monday, June 3. Watershed is investigating the break and said there could be water disruption for residents and businesses in the area.

– Watershed turned off an eight-inch main at 464 Fairlock Lane NW around 12:57 p.m. on Monday to make emergency repairs. This outage is impacting about 20 homes and one hydrant.

– Atlanta Public Schools also cancelled activities today due to the water main breaks.

“Summer School and programs are canceled today due to city-wide water main breakages,” the school district said in a Facebook post. “We appreciate your patience and understanding as we ensure the safety of our students and staff.”

– Crews are also making emergency repairs to a six-inch main at 472 Gartrell Street SE as of about 4:45 p.m. on Monday. Atlanta Watershed shared on social media that four homes, an apartment complex and three hydrants were impacted by this break.

– Watershed lifted the boil advisory for those impacted by the Joseph E. Boone break around 8:52 p.m. on Monday. A boil advisory remains in effect for those in midtown and eastern Atlanta who were impacted by the West Peachtree water main break.

– Water service was restored to the area near 464 Fairlock Lane NW around 9:53 p.m. on Monday.

Atlanta Watershed has not shared any further updates on social media about the repairs as of about 11:15 p.m. on Monday.

‘No connection between the two’

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, Atlanta Watershed Commissioner Al Wiggins, Jr., and other city officials gave another update on the situation on Monday around 11 a.m. The press conference was streamed on Watershed’s Facebook page. Our partners at Atlanta News First streamed the press conference as well.

In response to a question from reporters, Wiggins said the city has no reason to believe there is a connection between the breaks at West Peachtree and Joseph E. Boone Boulevard.

“I want you to understand that we have not had the opportunity to do a thorough inspection because we had so much water flow in this particular area,” Wiggins said. “As we excavate this site, we will learn more. I’m not saying that there isn’t a connection, but at this time we do not have a reason to believe that there is.”

Repairs at West Peachtree and 11th Streets are ongoing. There were two major water lines that intersect at the location. Wiggins also said the valve that turns off the water was located right underneath the water that was spewing out, so Watershed had to find another way to turn off the water.

“With that method, we wanted to hyper-localize the repairs to prevent anyone from coming off-line or being disconnected from water services unnecessarily,” Wiggins said. “This morning at 7, we were able to get into the hole after slowly reducing the pressure from our Hemphill plant and also with some devices that we installed here locally. It was important that we took a slow approach to not cause additional damage to our infrastructure. We are pleased with the direction the repairs are going now.”

He also reiterated that the repairs at Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and J.P. Brawley Drive are complete. The water infrastructure in that area is about 80 years old.

“While we were there, we identified some inefficiencies and the design of that system,” Wiggins said. “We made some real-time repairs with the design to prevent any future occurrences or leaks at that particular location. I can say that that location has been taken care of.”

Dickens also apologized for the events that happened over the weekend and said the city is “laser focused on this problem.” The city’s priority is to restore water service to residents and businesses. Dickens also issued a state of emergency on Saturday night due to the water main breaks.

“That state of emergency allows us to advance quickly purchases that we need to make, services that we need to acquire and also take on activities that we need to do in a very rapid fashion,” Dickens said. “The boil water advisory is still in effect as we work through the repair process right here at 11th Street and West Peachtree. Earlier this morning, around 1 a.m., we were able to start turning off the water.”

He added that the city is also monitoring the rest of the infrastructure system.

“As you know, yesterday there were some minor breaks occurred. I was out at two of them – one at 1190 Atlantic Drive and another one at Euclid and North Avenue. Each of those were repaired within an hour to an hour and a half,” Dickens said. “[They were] routine, normal breaks, and we took care of those rapidly.”

Atlanta, GA — Two more water main breaks were reported in Atlanta on Friday night at West Peachtree and 11th Street, and Atlantic Drive. The breaks occurred after a major main break occurred at Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and J.P. Brawley Drive.

There is currently no timeline for when water service will be restored.

Atlanta watershed officials have said the breaks are not connected, according to Atlanta News First. The first break was to a transmission main that moves a considerable amount of water through the city. It shut down several buildings across Atlanta, from countless offices to mainstays like the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium. ANF also reported on Friday that water officials clarified that there was one large water main break intersecting three water lines.

According to the city of Atlanta, the break also impacted critical services, kicking off low water pressure at Grady Memorial Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown and Fulton County Jail, among other locations.

On Saturday morning, crews could be seen working at the break near Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW. Near 8 a.m., workers hefted what appeared to be part of a pipe out of the ground, cheering and hugging each other afterward, ANF reported.

Another main break was reported at 2922 Glenwood Avenue as well earlier on Friday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our partners at Atlanta News First were on the scene this morning as Atlanta officials gave an update on the situation. In a Saturday press conference, Atlanta watershed Commissioner Al Wiggins Jr. said the first and largest water main broke due to age-related decay and corrosion. Crews have designed and implemented a new fitting for the pipe and are slowly repressurizing the system.

Currently, there is no estimate on how long that process may take, Wiggins Jr. said.

“Sometimes the saying is, ‘To go slower is to go faster,’” Wiggins Jr. told reporters on the scene. “Certainly, we understand the urgency of getting water service restored, but we also want to make sure that we do it in a matter that does not cause any further regression of our work.”

Crews are also working on repairing the second water main break at 11th Street and West Peachtree Street NW, according to Wiggins Jr.

According to ANF, officials don’t know how much the repairs will cost. They are also inspecting other water main intersections to make sure the “fragile setup” doesn’t fail as the water pressure returns, Wiggins Jr. said.

Watershed’s outage map shows water is off at 775 Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW and 2922 Glenwood Ave. SE and there are service impacts at West Peachtree Street NW and 11th Street NE, 717 Berkeley Ave. NW, 2795 Ocean Valley Drive and 1190 Atlantic Drive NW, as of about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 1.

Water service was turned off in much of Atlanta on Friday evening as crews began repairing the break on Boone Boulevard. Atlanta Watershed also issued a boil advisory, and it does not appear the advisory has been lifted as of about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Atlanta, GA — The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management will begin repairing a water main break at the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and J.P. Brawley Drive at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 31. This means water will be off and water pressure may be low in much of metro Atlanta.

Our media partners at Atlanta News First reported that a water main break happened on a transmission main. Atlanta city officials have said both carry large volumes of water throughout Atlanta. ANF also reported that water officials clarified that there was one large water main break intersecting three water lines.

“We will not have timeline on repairs until crews can assess the situation underground,” a spokesperson for Atlanta DMW said.

The boil advisory is still in effect and is out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s guidance for public advisory, according to a press release.

According to a press release, crews are onsite and working to make repairs to the 32-inch water main at Joseph E. Boone Boulevard impacting the area. Another main break was reported at 2922 Glenwood Avenue as well, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Atlanta Watershed outage map shows water is off at 775 Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW and at 2922 Glenwood Avenue as of 11:54 a.m. The map does not appear to show a significant citywide outage. But residents in East Lake, Kirkwood and Little Five Points have reported they have no water or little water pressure.

DeKalb County Fire Rescue has sent a 3,000-gallon tanker to help the the city of Atlanta amid the water main break, according to a press release from the county. DeKalb County sent one of its two tankers to Atlanta Fire Rescue Station No. 1.

“DeKalb County is honored to be able to support the city of Atlanta during this crisis,” DeKalb County Fire Chief Darnell Fullum said. “DeKalb County stands ready to provide additional resources if needed.

ANF reported earlier that Grady Memorial Hospital was experiencing low water pressure. The hospital canceled all elective and non-urgent procedures and appointments. Patients will be contacted for rescheduling. Atlanta DMW told Decaturish that, “Grady Hospital does not have a secondary water source.”

Atlanta Watershed has called for the immediate water restriction to critical uses to allow system pressures to build up again.

“The boil water advisory will remain in place until DWM is cleared to lift it following sampling protocols,” the press release says. “To protect the public from a potential health hazard, all residents and property owners who have experienced water outages and/or low water pressures are advised to boil all water before using or use bottled water for drinking, cooking, preparing baby food, or brushing their teeth.”

Water should be boiled for at least one minute past a rolling boil. Those with immune deficiencies, the elderly and infants should be cautious. Individuals should not drink water from public water fountains in the impacted area.

“Vigorous hand washing or showers with soap and tap water should be safe for basic personal hygiene. However, if washing hands to prepare food, use boiled (then cooled) water and handwashing soap,” the press release says. “The Department of Watershed Management will follow its flushing protocols for the system as a precaution and has sampled the affected zones to affirm that there is no contamination in the system. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division will advise the Department of Watershed Management when the advisory can be lifted.”

A boil advisory is issued when water supply is or could be contaminated by pathogens because of an event such as a water main break. It doesn’t necessarily mean water has been contaminated, according to ANF.

Using bottled water is the best option when a boil advisory has been issued. It’s almost guaranteed not to be from the same water source as the boil advisory and can be used for various things like drinking, showering and laundry. If bottled water is not an option, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend boiling water.

Here are some tips from Atlanta News First:

The CDC says to fill a pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil for one minute. After the water has cooled, you can put it in a clean container and use it for whatever you need.

If boiling is not an option, you can disinfect your water by using unscented bleach with 5-9% of sodium hypochlorite. You should use .5 milliliters for every gallon of water.

You should especially use boiled or bottled water for cooking, drinking and brushing your teeth. Boiled or bottled water should also be used for pets.

You can use tap water to wash your hands, shower or do your laundry, according to the CDC. Just be sure to not swallow any water. Sponge baths are also an option.

Boiling your water is recommended even if you have a filter because many do not catch bacteria or viruses.

Water service will be restored in the affected area until about 5 p.m. to give businesses and homeowners time to prepare for the outage. The affected area will experience a water outage as DWM crews begin making repairs to the transmission main, according to a press release.

ANF also reported that several facilities in Atlanta are experiencing water outages or low water pressure. Grady Memorial Hospital has low water pressure. Fulton County’s downtown facilities are closed. Water has been shut off at the following MARTA stations: West End, Lakewood, Five Points, Georgia State, King Memorial, Inman Park, Candler Park, Bankhead and College Park. The Georgia State Capitol is without water, the Georgia Supreme Court is closed and Atlanta City Hall let employees go home early because of no water.
