After the closing of Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center, Grady Hospital was the only Level 1 trauma center in the metro area.
MARIETTA, Ga. — A metro Atlanta hospital has moved up the ranks to become a Level 1 trauma hospital, according to a news release.
Wellstar Kennestone in Marietta received its verification from the American College of Surgeons and designation from the Georgia Department of Public Health State Office of EMS and Trauma.
“Wellstar strives to provide compassionate, world-class care to every person, every time. The designation of Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center as a Level I Trauma Center further strengthens the network of quality trauma care that exists across Metro Atlanta and Georgia,” said Candice L. Saunders, President and CEO of Wellstar Health System.
It comes after Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center closed two years ago, leaving Grady Hospital as the only Level 1 trauma center in the metro Atlanta area.
Atlanta officials have since been trying to figure out what to do with the site of the old hospital.

Although the latest Level 1 trauma center addition doesn't replace the level of care for those in South Fulton, it makes it more accessible to the metropolitan area.
According to the news release, the hospital in Marietta must show that it can provide the highest level of trauma care.
The criteria for a Level 1 trauma center require comprehensive services for trauma cases, advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities, and more.
The hospital joined Grady Hospital and the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville as a Level 1 trauma center.
Wellstar has another Level 1 trauma center in Augusta called Wellstar MCG Health.
Wellstar's Atlanta Medical Center closed its doors in October 2022, impacting thousands of residents who needed trauma care. The hospital was one of two Level 1 trauma centers with Grady Hospital in the metro. The closing has since caused an influx of patients at Grady who need top trauma care treatment.
According to the American College of Surgeons, verified Level I trauma centers must be capable of providing system leadership and comprehensive trauma care for all injuries.
“The big differences between a Level II and a Level I include a robust academic research component and having the range of surgical subspecialists to be able to care for the most complex of injuries,” Hall County Hospital medical director Dr. Matthew Vassy previously said when a Gainesville hospital upgraded to a Level 1 trauma center.
Experts said that Level 1 trauma centers can also help first responders and personnel develop a local trauma system and regional disaster planning.

Isaiah has exemplified academic excellence throughout his educational career beginning in Pre-K, throughout starting high school during the COVID-19 pandemic and up to graduation. My son has maintained above a 3.0 GPA in addition to participating in extracurricular activities such as Advanced Chorus, Theater & Performing Arts, Dance, Track & Field just to name a few. Isaiah also maintained active membership in the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta since he was 6 years old, and joined the Youth Ministry of Atlanta's Grace Church International during 5th grade for which he is still a youth leader. He is undoubtedly talented, intelligent and gifted, but he also loves God, his family; is compassionate and enjoys helping others.

Georgia leaders, including Sens. Rafael Warnock, John Ossoff, and Rep. Barry Loudermilk, are demanding answers about alleged fraud and mail tampering at the USPS location on Lawrence Street.
“Well, I know mistakes happen, but continuously,” said Marietta resident Jennifer Walton. She told 11Alive that since November, she has been having issues getting her packages. She says confirmation shows the items were delivered to her home, yet she has evidence to the contrary.
“It says delivered mail, but it’s not delivered. So we have a Ring camera to monitor it, we have informed delivery to monitor it, and I run to the mailbox every time we receive a package, but it’s not there,” said Walton.
Walton says when she confronts USPS with that information, the responses are inconsistent.
"Yesterday, they said it was incorrectly marked delivered, and it really wasn’t, and today she is not really addressing it; they are just trying to find my package," she said.
Walton isn’t sure if her packages are being stolen, but she says she was recently informed that she got a new mail carrier. As she searches for answers, Sens. Ossoff and Warnock, along with Rep. Barry Loudermilk, have launched a separate inquiry into the Marietta Post office at 257 Lawrence Street for alleged crimes committed there, including mail theft, forgery, document fraud, and check washing.
Despite the claims, some still swear by the Marietta USPS location.
“I drove 25 miles to this post office,” said Hiram resident Meg Hunt-Williams, who says because of issues at her local USPS, she makes the drive to Marietta whenever she needs postal assistance.
“Coming to the Marietta post office is one big blessing because it’s one of the best-organized post offices here in the Atlanta vicinity, and these people know me when I walk in because they know how far I drive,” Hunt-Williams went on to say.
As for Walton, she says she just wants her items. “The rest of my mail seems to appear but when I order something from a retail environment, it’s delivered but not there," she said.
We reached out to Sens. Ossoff and Warnock’s offices, but they were unavailable for comment. We also contacted representatives from USPS, but so far, we have not heard back.
