Fulton County is preparing to kick off the Advance Voting period for the March 12, 2024, Presidential Primary Election. The Advanced Voting period will take place from Monday, February 19 through Friday, March 8.

Voters can participate in advanced voting at one of the 36 polling locations available around Fulton County. Additionally, 7 of those locations will also double as Absentee Ballot Drop Box locations:

People who live in Willow Springs in Roswell are pushing for the city to put in sidewalks after two women were hit while walking in April.

ROSWELL, Ga. — The roads in the Willow Springs community in Roswell have painted lines on each side for people to walk and bike.

However, some people said they need more and want sidewalks in hopes of making the neighborhood safer as traffic increases.

The push for safety was heightened after a hit-and-run in April 2023 that left two women in their 70s with serious injuries.

The president of the HOA, Bob Evers, told 11Alive both women are still in wheelchairs.

“We want the city to do the right thing and just get out of the way and enable sidewalks, said Evers as he stood across from where the women were hit.

One of the women who was injured, Angela Sheaffer, sent the following statement to 11Alive:

“I also know that we were struck with full force, so we clearly didn’t see it coming. Our impact dented the windshield, broke the passenger headlight leaving pieces of it in the street, and broke off the side mirror. My friend and I are lucky to be alive. It will be several months before we may be able to walk again, let alone be in the physical condition we were at the time of the accident. There are physical scars and changes that will never heal.”

Evers said they have been trying for years to get the city to put in sidewalks.

“Unfortunately, there is blood on their hands now because we warned them this was going to happen,” Evers said.

Evers sent 11Alive Ring doorbell footage of the accident before pointing out right where it happened.

“They were like snowplowed, up in the air, both hit the windshield and then rolled over,” Evers said. “And they landed right on the curb right there.”

Evers said they proposed and designed a sidewalk that runs on the interior side of the 3.5-mile loop in the neighborhood that he said gets a lot of traffic due to people using it as a cut through.

He explained they did a survey of the neighborhood and said a majority of people agreed they would pay for the sidewalk.

11Alive’s Molly Oak spoke with Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson on Thursday about the neighborhood’s concerns. He said there have been a lot of conversations about sidewalks in the community and said the city did a trial with the four-foot striped lanes on both sides of the street.

“It really is a HOA (issue). It’s a neighborhood issue. The city is not in the business of putting sidewalks in private neighborhoods throughout the city,” the mayor said. “I will tell you though we’ll support it and will do anything to facilitate it.”

The mayor said if the community is willing to pay for the sidewalks, then the city will back them.

“I’d say if they have the money to pay for the sidewalks in, they should get the sidewalks done,” Wilson said. “100% the city will support that all day long.”

Evers said they plan to meet with the city on Monday to further voice their concerns.

As for the driver of the car, police arrested and charged the 17-year-old.

Police said the investigation is now in the hands of the Fulton County District Attorney for prosecution.

Spanish-Latin restaurant Casa Robles (“Oak House”), backed by Ryan and Dan Pernice, the brothers behind Table and Main, Osteria Mattone, and Coalition Food and Beverage, is now open in downtown Roswell.

Taking over the former Whiskey Project space on Oak Street, Casa Robles is currently open for dinner only, with weekend brunch expected to begin in the coming weeks.

After serving as the executive sous chef for Osteria Mattone for a decade, El Salvador native Laura Orellana now leads the kitchen at Casa Robles. Orellana received her culinary training in Seville, Spain, at Escuela de Hosteleria de Sevilla, and lived in Spain for five years working in restaurants throughout the country.

The menu for Casa Robles features a mix of traditional Spanish tapas and dishes from El Salvador and Mexico, including pupusas, cochinita pibil tacos, tamales stuffed with Salvadorean chicken and chickpeas, and mariscada (a spicy seafood stew.) Dessert includes flan, churros, and tarta de Santiago (Spanish almond cake).

Like the food, the wine menu at Casa Robles leans heavily toward producers from Spain, Portugal, and South America, with cocktails featuring rum, tequila, mezcal, and pisco.

EAST COBB, GA — Soaring oil prices mean more pain at the pump for East Cobb residents, with the average gas price already well above the $4.29 mark across the state, according to GasBuddy.

Gas prices in the Atlanta area are above the statewide average, priced at $4.33 per gallon in the metro on Thursday. In Cobb County, the average gas price was $4.30 per gallon and rising.

The increases are especially sharp considering that the average gas price in Georgia was just $2.64 a year ago, according to AAA. The average price in the Atlanta metro area this time last year was $2.62.

But you may be able to still save a little bit if you know where to look in East Cobb.

According to GasBuddy, the cheapest gas in East Cobb is selling for $4.05 per gallon at Coastal, 2011 Lower Roswell Road as of Thursday afternoon. Here are some other places you can save in and around East Cobb:

As gasoline prices in Georgia hit their highest mark in nearly 14 years, Gov. Brian Kemp tweeted Tuesday that his office is working with the general assembly to temporarily suspend the state's gas tax.

The announcement comes after President Joe Biden said Tuesday morning he was placing a ban on the import of Russian oil in the United States after Russia's violent invasion of Ukraine.

Kemp said he wants to "lessen the significant impact" higher gas prices are having on families. Prices are up 67 cents from last week's average.

Georgia collects a state excise tax of 28.7 cents per gallon on gasoline sales, according to a January 2022 report from American Petroleum Institute. Georgians pay 55.95 cents per gallon accounting for all state and federal taxes and fees.

The increases mark the largest price hikes since Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2005, devastating the nation's oil and gas industry, according to CNN.

A new tapas and tacos restaurant will join Roswell’s dining scene early next year. An official statement from Casa Robles says the forthcoming concept will feature traditional Spanish tapas and bold Latin American influences from Chef Laura Orellana who was born in El Salvador and received her culinary training in Seville, Spain.

Located downtown at 45 Oak Street, Casa Robles is the latest restaurant venture from brothers Ryan and Dan Pernice of RO Hospitality. The group currently owns and operates three other restaurant concepts north of Atlanta – Table and Main and Osteria Mattone in Roswell and Coalition Food and Beverage in Alpharetta.

The Oak Street location was previously home to the The Whiskey Project, a modern American restaurant and bar, which closed in June to relocate to a new location in Crabapple.

“RO Hospitality is proud to announce its fourth restaurant venture, Casa Robles Roswell, located at 45 Oak Street in downtown Roswell due to open Spring 2022!” Ryan shared in a Facebook post.

A website has been set up for the restaurant and soon to be guests are invited to follow its Instagram and Facebook to be the first to hear updates and announcements. Based on captions teasing the menu, guests can expect such delicious eats as:

Orellana currently serves as executive sous chef at Osteria Mattone and is eager to bring her take on popular and not-so-much Spanish-Latin foods. The menu will also include a variety of beverages including spirits, creative cocktails, and wines from Spain, Portugal, and South America.

Casa Robles will feature a dining room that seats 56 and a bar that seats 16. A covered patio will include an additional 32 seats.
