Avoiding Sports Injury with Chiropractic Care

30 Mar 16

We are a country of sports enthusiasts. From rapid fans to weekend warriors; we swing, throw, catch, dribble, shoot, swim, hike, bike and spike our way to happiness. And injury. Though, as healthcare professionals, the team at Innovative Health and Wellness always tries to encourage our patients to engage in a healthy amount of physical activities, sports can take a toll on your body over time. Though an average athlete can expect some aches and pains after strenuous exercise or activities, avoiding injury is key to your ability to enjoy those activities for as long as possible. To help reduce the risk of injury remember the following:

  • Always wear the proper gear. Protect yourself by donning the correct eyewear, shoes, helmets, pads and mouthpieces whenever appropriate.
  • Condition and train. Don’t get into a new sport completely unprepared. Engage in the right exercises to ready your muscles and bones for new movements.
  • Take breaks. This advice should be heeded during the activity itself and throughout the year too. Your body will be less prone to injury if you take time during your rugby game or golf tournament than if you played the entire time. Recovery time is also recommended at least one day a week or one month during the year for intense athletes.
  • Stay hydrated. A well-hydrated body responds better during play and recovers better afterwards. Avoid becoming dehydrated by drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after any activity; more so if active under the hot sun.

At Innovative Health & Wellness in Woodstock, our chiropractors specialize in the treatment and recovery of sports injuries. As part of our holistic healing program, our sports chiropractic services help athletes of all ages and levels experience optimal functionality and performance.
