Low Testosterone & Hormone Replacement Therapies: When are They Appropriate?

10 Oct 15

Have you noticed a recent decline in your energy levels, mood, and sex levels? As we age, hormone levels naturally drop, creating a variety of physical health issues that many find disconcerting at best, painful and emotionally-draining at worst. For those shown to have hormonal drops, low testosterone therapy can be a life-changing answer to their problems. Many men with these symptoms have reported improved energy, libido, and mood after beginning hormone replacement therapy. While testosterone therapy isn’t for everyone, and blood tests should always be conducted to confirm that low testosterone is the cause of your symptoms, it does often provide the relief that is desired.

The symptoms of low testosterone are subtle but can have a major impact on your life. Testosterone levels decline naturally in men as they age, but can also be negatively impacted by certain lifestyle choices like smoking and bad nutrition. Below are the symptoms of low testosterone:

  • Low libido (sex drive)
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Fatigue and low energy level
  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Hair loss
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Depression
  • Irritability

If you feel like you’re showing signs of low testosterone, it’s important that you see us and have tests done to make sure that these signs are in fact caused by low testosterone and not something else.

Testosterone supplements come in different forms:

Skin patch: Worn on the arm or upper body, you only have to change the patch once a day.

Gels: These come in clear packets of testosterone gel. Testosterone is absorbed directly through the skin when you apply the gel once a day.

Mouth patch: This is a tablet that sticks to the upper gums above the incisor and is applied twice a day.

Injections and implants: Testosterone can also be injected directly into the muscles, or implanted as pellets in the soft tissues.
