Tips for Preventing Sports Injuries

How Your Chiropractor can Help with Your Recovery

If you’ve ever suffered from a strain, sprain or broken bone while playing sports you know just how painful and frustrating recovery can be. Taking care of yourself and doing what you need before engaging in activity will help you avoid sports injuries, keeping you well enough to play another day. Almost 2 million emergency room visits are made every year, with more than 70,000 of those resulting in hospitalization. Injuries requiring medical care included concussions, strains, sprains, and disconnected or broken bones. Poor training, improper use of gear and accidents on the field all contribute to the high number of sports injuries. As Woodstock’s experts in sports chiropractic care, we recommend the following in helping to keep you free of sports injuries.

  • Be careful when stretching. Don’t bend your knees more than halfway when doing knee bends. Don’t twist knees or elbows during routines and keep feet firmly planted at all times.
  • Try to remember to land with your knees slightly bent when jumping.
  • Wear the proper shoes for the sport. Football, softball and soccer are all sports wear cleats should be worn for better traction. Keep ankles and knees healthy by investing in a good pair of cleats. Never wear street shoes on the basketball court.
  • Hydrate before, during and after every time you play.
  • Understand your body’s limits and listen when it’s telling you its had enough.
  • Know the difference between discomfort and pain. Discomfort is you pushing your body. Pain is a signal that you’ve pushed too far. Listen to your body.
  • Use proper training methods for cardiovascular strength, power and endurance before engaging in new sports understanding that you’ll be moving new muscles in new ways, exposing them to the likelihood of injury.

Avoiding Sports Injury with Chiropractic Care

We are a country of sports enthusiasts. From rapid fans to weekend warriors; we swing, throw, catch, dribble, shoot, swim, hike, bike and spike our way to happiness. And injury. Though, as healthcare professionals, the team at Innovative Health and Wellness always tries to encourage our patients to engage in a healthy amount of physical activities, sports can take a toll on your body over time. Though an average athlete can expect some aches and pains after strenuous exercise or activities, avoiding injury is key to your ability to enjoy those activities for as long as possible. To help reduce the risk of injury remember the following:

  • Always wear the proper gear. Protect yourself by donning the correct eyewear, shoes, helmets, pads and mouthpieces whenever appropriate.
  • Condition and train. Don’t get into a new sport completely unprepared. Engage in the right exercises to ready your muscles and bones for new movements.
  • Take breaks. This advice should be heeded during the activity itself and throughout the year too. Your body will be less prone to injury if you take time during your rugby game or golf tournament than if you played the entire time. Recovery time is also recommended at least one day a week or one month during the year for intense athletes.
  • Stay hydrated. A well-hydrated body responds better during play and recovers better afterwards. Avoid becoming dehydrated by drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after any activity; more so if active under the hot sun.

At Innovative Health & Wellness in Woodstock, our chiropractors specialize in the treatment and recovery of sports injuries. As part of our holistic healing program, our sports chiropractic services help athletes of all ages and levels experience optimal functionality and performance.

How Your Chiropractor Delivers More Than Just Pain Relief

Ask almost any American about chiropractors and what they do, and you’re bound to get a load of misinformation, myths and downright lies. Its not the fault of the average person really. Unfortunately, a war on chiropractic, and other forms of alternative medicine, has been initiated by some in Western traditional medicine and the propaganda that has been spread has frightened many away from trying the treatment for themselves. Therefore, many Americans still believe that chiropractors belong to some type of pseudo-science that ends up doing more harm than good. More and more studies are starting to turn the tide, however, bringing more people around to the discovery that chiropractic adjustments do more than deliver drug-free pain relief.

How your chiropractor in Woodstock can help

After starting regular visits with a chiropractor in Woodstock, many of our patients report that previously existing health issues either lessened in intensity or frequency, or had diminished altogether. Body-wide health improvements include:

  • Increased fertility – Numerous couples who had previously experienced trouble trying to conceive, found that unblocking nerve signals through spinal adjustments helped result in healthy pregnancies.
  • Easier periods – Women of all ages also reported that periods were easier and less complicated during chiropractic care.
  • A stronger immune system – Studies show that those who undergo routine spinal adjustments experience the flu, colds and other common illnesses less than their chiropractor-shunning counterparts.
  • Improved digestion – Chiropractic care has been shown to help with both constipation and recurring diarrhea, acid reflux and heartburn.
  • Greater range of motion – Arthritis sufferers are just some of those patients that report enjoying pain free movement in both small and large joints; allowing the pain-free engagement of daily activities.

Combining the unique disciplines of medicine, chiropractic, disc compression, and neuro-diagnostics in a state-of-the-art facility, Innovative Health and Wellness treats conditions ranging from chronic pain to peripheral neuropathy to food sensitivity.

Get to Know Your Chiropractor

As more and more Americans search for alternative health care methods, chiropractic care continues to grow in popularity. As does the number of chiropractors. Perform a Google search for “chiropractors” in your local area and the results are of an overwhelming amount. A search for Woodstock Chiropractors generated more than 92,000 results. Now it should go with out saying that not all those results are for individual chiropractors in the area, but it does serve to show that there is no shortage of practitioners in the region. So how does one choose? It’s important to know your chiropractor and what technique he/she uses for the best and longest-lasting results. Make sure you get the information you need about your chiropractic care by asking the following questions:

  • What type of chiropractic techniques do you use?
  • How much experience do you have dealing with my particular health issue?
  • Will you be able to help me recover from this issue?
  • How long is the treatment plan?
  • Will my insurance cover my chiropractic care?
  • How long have you been a chiropractor?
  • What can I expect from this first visit and from follow-up visits?
  • Will I need additional care from other health care professionals?
  • What can I do to facilitate healing apart from chiropractic treatments?

By educating yourself about chiropractic care and the chiropractors in your area, you’ll ensure a better overall healthcare experience. At Innovative Health and Wellness we remain consistently dedicated to helping our patient’s realize their optimal health. Spinal Stenosis Explained

spinal stenosis treatment BuckheadIf you’ve been diagnosed with spinal stenosis, either cervical or lumbar, you may be wondering just what that means in terms of spine health. According to spine-health.com, spinal stenosis is the “abnormal narrowing of the bone channel occupied by the spinal nerves or the spinal cord”. This narrowing can develop over time; occuring through out different areas of the spine. Though some people are born with the congenital form of spinal stenosis, it is more often experienced throughout the deleterious stage of life. Symptoms of spinal stenosis include radiating pain, numbness and weakness in the extremities. Where these symptoms are similar for both lumbar and cervical stenosis there are differences between the two that are important to note.

Lumbar spinal stenosis occurs in the lower back where cervical refers to the narrowing that occurs in the neck region. Often producing the same symptoms experienced by sciatica, lumbar stenosis often restricts blood flow to the legs, often causing leg pain during walking, or claudification. Though it most often is found at the L4-L5 or L3-L4 area of the spine, lumbar stenosis can actually occur anywhere in the spine.

When the narrowing of the spinal channel is found in the neck, it is referred to as cervical stenosis. Here it produces the possibility of compression of the spinal cord. This compression can lead to serious health issues that include the risk of paralysis. Intensive treatment is often needed when cervical spinal stenosis has been discovered.

Understanding the details of spinal stenosis, and the treatments that relieve its accompanying symptoms, is just one area of expertise at Innovative Health and Wellness. Our spinal stenosis treatments allow patients to avoid invasive surgery and helps them to experience drug-free pain relief.
